Ultrasounds Q & A

What is ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a diagnostic test that uses high-frequency sound wave technology to create live-action images of your internal organs and tissues. Health providers use ultrasounds to evaluate and diagnose health concerns.

The team at Advanced Vascular Solutions performs arterial and venous ultrasounds at the office to help diagnose vascular conditions.

What are arterial and venous ultrasounds?

Arterial and venous ultrasounds are vascular ultrasounds that evaluate blood circulation in your arms and legs. The team performs these diagnostic tests without anesthesia or needles.

During an arterial or venous ultrasound, your provider places a transducer on your skin. The transducer transmits sound waves into your body, which bounce off the blood cells as they move through your blood vessels.

The transducer relays the sound waves to a computer that translates the information into moving images. Your Advanced Vascular Solutions expert evaluates how well your blood moves through your blood vessels and looks for signs that may indicate a circulation problem.

Who needs ultrasound?

The team at Advanced Vascular Solutions determines who needs an arterial or venous ultrasound after an evaluation. They may recommend the noninvasive diagnostic test if they’re concerned you may have a vascular condition such as:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Peripheral arterial disease
  • Chronic venous insufficiency

You may benefit from an arterial or venous ultrasound if you have varicose veins that cause leg pain, itching, or swelling. The team may also perform an ultrasound to assess circulation in your legs if you have a nonhealing leg wound or ulcer.

Advanced Vascular Solutions encourages patients with symptoms of a vascular condition to contact the office to schedule a consultation. Ultrasounds are noninvasive, painless tests, and as the team reminds you, “It never hurts to check.”

Though your symptoms may be mild, they also may be a sign of a more serious health issue.

What happens during an ultrasound?

The specifics of your ultrasound depend on your symptoms. Your Advanced Vascular Solutions expert reviews what you can expect during your ultrasound at your consultation.

The in-office test takes 30-90 minutes. In most cases, there’s no need for any special preparation prior to the ultrasound.

While you lie back and relax in the exam chair, your provider runs the transducer over your legs or arms to generate the images. After your test, they review the findings with you and schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss treatment options.
