What a Venous Ultrasound Reveals About Your Health

Your veins are a critical part of your circulatory system, carrying your blood back to your heart for reoxygenation. If your veins aren’t working properly, you can have all sorts of problems, from achy, tired legs and varicose veins to serious issues like deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

So when we see the warning signs of vein problems, we usually recommend a venous ultrasound to identify obstructions, malfunctioning valves, and other issues that interfere with blood circulation.

Our experts at Advanced Vascular Solutions have years of experience using ultrasound and other advanced imaging modalities to identify these venous issues and help you take action as soon as possible. Here’s everything you need to know about this test and what it tells us about your vein health.

What is venous ultrasound?

Venous ultrasound (also called venous mapping) is a noninvasive imaging test that uses sound waves to create images of the veins and the movement of blood through them. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound does not involve radiation.

During the test, we place a small handheld device called a transducer against your skin. This device sends sound waves into the body and captures the echoes that bounce back. Those echoes generate images that show how blood is flowing through the veins.

Here are a few things we can catch with a venous ultrasound.

Chronic venous insufficiency

Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when veins have difficulty sending blood back to the heart. Over time, this can lead to swelling, skin changes, and discomfort in the legs.

A venous ultrasound can reveal whether blood is flowing in the wrong direction due to damaged valves and guide treatment decisions to help us determine whether lifestyle changes, compression therapy, or medical procedures (or a combination) are best for you.

Investigating leg pain or swelling

Leg pain and swelling can have many different causes, which is why imaging tests are often necessary to pinpoint the source.

A venous ultrasound allows us to assess whether circulation problems are contributing to your symptoms. In addition to identifying clots or valve dysfunction, the test can reveal areas where blood flow may be restricted or abnormal.

Evaluating varicose veins

Healthy veins contain valves that keep blood moving upward toward the heart. When these valves weaken or stop working properly, blood can pool in the veins and cause them to enlarge, a condition called varicose veins.

Varicose veins are more than a cosmetic concern for many people. They can signal underlying circulation problems that cause symptoms such as heaviness, swelling, or aching in the legs.

A venous ultrasound helps us determine how well your venous valves are functioning and which treatment plan is best.

Detecting blood clots

One of the most important reasons we order a venous ultrasound is to check for blood clots, particularly DVT.

DVT occurs when a clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg. This can be dangerous because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs, leading to a pulmonary embolism.

A venous ultrasound allows us to see whether blood is flowing normally or if a blockage is present. If a clot is detected, we begin treatment quickly to reduce the risk of complications.

Put your vein health first

A venous ultrasound is a valuable diagnostic tool that provides important insight into your vascular health. From detecting blood clots to evaluating vein valve function, this simple test can uncover circulation problems that may otherwise go unnoticed.

And when it comes to circulation issues, early detection can make a significant difference.
